  • Sector: Legal

Private practice law firms are keen to be regarded as integral players in the retail legal market by showcasing their specialisms to an audience of general counsel and in-house legal directors from the retail community. Maintaining strong relationships with current clients and having the opportunity to network with potential new clients in a face-to-face setting were also primary drivers for the partnership.

The industry’s leading networking event for legal leaders – Retail Week’s General Counsel Summit – took place on June 21, 2023, at Rose Court, South Bank. The free-to-attend conference was a standout success, featuring engaging and topical panels, and high-level roundtable discussions.

Attendees heard from an unmissable line-up of GCs from companies including Dr Martens, Sainsbury’s, Kingfisher, Currys, River Island, Tesco and Mamas & Papas.

Content themes explored included:

  • Horizon planning in an age of volatility
  • Making metaverse success a reality
  • Nurturing EQ in the legal leaders of tomorrow
  • Creating secure and ethical supply chains
  • Rising to retail’s ecommerce challenges

Sponsors had the opportunity to spend the day with the UK’s foremost senior legal professionals who are leading legal and regulatory teams, and driving strategic change across their businesses.

The 2023 Summit was attended by retailers including Greggs, Monsoon Accessorize, Asos, The Body Shop, The Range, Lululemon, Specsavers and many more.

Registered job titles included chief legal officers, group legal and strategic governance directors, Uk and Ireland general counsel, legal and sustainability directors, legal counsel for group expansion and international retail, and group compliance directors. Sponsors received data from every retailer in the room.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. A GC from a leading multinational retail chain said: “This conference is unique and valuable to me as a senior lawyer in retail. I thought the choice of topics was very good – looking at current and future challenges. I also liked the selection of speakers – a good mixture of people with different experiences and profiles.”

Meanwhile, the head of legal and compliance from a leading high-street F&B operator said: “The GC Summit was very interesting and informative, and it was useful to connect with other GCs working in similar roles in retail; otherwise my networking tends to lack a bit of variety.”
